For some people, winning two silver medals may lead to some raucous celebrations and a wild night out. For England’s Adam Gemili, Commonwealth Games success meant a protein shake and an ice bath.
The 20 year old former Dartford schoolboy claimed his first silver medal on Monday evening in the 100m sprint, dividing Jamaica’s Kemar Bailey-Cole and Nickel Ashmeade who won Gold and Bronze respectively.
Gemili said: “I was so excited to race and compete for my country. I wanted to go out and show the other guys what england has to offer.
“The race for me was crazy. I received an awesome reception from the crowd and that really spurred me on to do as well as I can.
“Hampden Park is an iconic venue and to run there was a great honour. I was nervous but just had to get into my focus and use it to my advantage.”
But after the race was over, it was back to business for Gemili, whose mind was already on Saturday’s 4x100m relay.
“I was so pleased to win a silver medal, but to celebrate I just had a protein shake and an ice bath as I had to recover for the relay.”
And it seems the focus paid off for the Kent youngster who emulated his achievements as part of England’s 4x100m team on Saturday.
And there was no question of being put off by the man everyone was talking about during the Games.
“Winning another silver felt amazing as it was a lovely way to top of a brilliant championships.
“We were pushing for the gold but with Usain Bolt running, it was always going to be hard to beat the Jamaicans.
“People talk about who is favourite but you shouldn’t let that affect you.
“You come to realise regardless of who is in the race you just have to go and do your best and anything could happen.”
And that is exactly what Gemili will be doing when he heads to the European Championships to compete in the 200m next month.
He will be hoping there will be more cause for ice bath and protein shake celebration.
