The Luis Suarez ban is not long enough

Yesterday, Uruguay and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was suspended for nine matches and banned for four months from football after biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during their World Cup group match. Here are my thoughts on the ban.

I don’t think the ban is long enough. This is the third time Suarez has bitten someone during a match and incredibly since 2010, he has been banned for 39 matches without receiving a single red card. To me, that says FIFA should have taken some other form of action as this punishment clearly means nothing to him. Luis Suarez is an excellent footballer but an appalling sportsman and once again has made the focus of his performance about his off ball antics. As for being a role model, he may not want to be one but when you’re a good footballer, it comes with the job. Parents cannot do much about a child idolising someone who is good at what they do, except to point out that their actions are wrong and FIFA’s ban has enforced this message. I do think the ban could have been longer or taken a different form but i’m not sure I really expected anymore of FIFA.
